The salt mine
Located some kilometers from Krakow, Poland, the small town of Wieliczka is famous for hosting the edest salt mine in the world, still in operation.
History
At that time, the salt is extremely important. Indeed it is the salt used to preserve food and hides of tanning. The king of Poland saw the benefit they could derrive from these salt mines and provide a monopoly on the exrtaction and sale of salt in the form of blocks or brine, until 1776. When Poland parted for the first time. The salt of the Krakow area will become one of the largest European companies. Gradually, skilled workers dug almost 300 km of tunnels spread over nine levels.

Our visit
We visited the salt mine on Wednesday, March 24th at Wieliczka nearby Krakow. our guide's name was Adams and he spoke French. To get to one level, we had to go down 380 steps. altogether we went down over 612 steps. The total volume of the mine is 3000 cubic meters of salt. In the mine there was no life (no insectes, no rodents, no mushrooms...).Everything was made of salt and wood. At level 2 there was a therapy center for treating breathing disease. We travelled 2 kms over 300km of underground gallery! Also in this mine there are 9 levels, least 327 meters deep salt may be of different colors depending on the area but usually salt is grey. The mine has been active since the middle of the third century. As child labor was hard and dangerous it was always the danger of toxic gas in the late 17 th century . Miners buildt small chapels throughout the mine. Each morning they prayed. For over three centuries the chapels were exposed to the airstream. To remove this colorless and odorless gas, some minor burning lamps with a naked flame, they headed toward sthe ceiling. To raise the salt to the surface there were machines :
one drawn by horses.
and shot by men
The interior of the mine were black and wet. There was also a problem with fresh water and to meet the miners had to use a machine pumping. To reasure themselves, the miners used to say that dwarfs lived in the mine and hid a treassure... But it was a nice legend.
